In the very early days of her first School at Loreto Ballarat, Mother Gonzaga Barry wrote a description of the qualities she expected from her first student leaders, to whom she gave the name School Councillors, significantly the one we still use at Loreto Toorak today.
“A School Councillor should be distinguished by her Fidelity, Sincerity, and Charity. Being Chosen by the votes of her companions and with the approbation of the Nuns, she is placed in a position of Trust and owes loyalty to both. … She should be the kind sincere and thoughtful friend of all. One to whom a child in trouble could apply to with confidence, sure of Sympathy and Wise Counsel. … By giving good example they can hope to gain the confidence and respect of all and so be able to do much good in their school life.”
Mother Gonzaga Barry
Our School Councillors take on responsibilities in Administrative (Mission, Justice, Environment, Rathfarnham, Wellbeing), Pastoral (Years 7-11) and House (Barry, Mornane, Mulhall, and Ward) portfolios. They work in pairs to build a sense of belonging and School spirit across the student body through their leadership of new ideas, School traditions, and engagement. The Councillor group provides leadership by “giving good example”, in order “to do much good in their school life”.
The Councillors are joined in this task by their fellow Captains and Leaders in the areas of Music, Sport, Drama, and Public Speaking. These leaders share their particular gifts to inspire and encourage others, an essential contribution to the School community that underpins the value a Loreto education places on forming the capacity of each student. The Student Councillors, as leaders grounded in service, compassion and conviction, enable and empower all students to make a difference, now and into their futures.
Congratulations to our Student Leaders for 2022-2023. We look forward to the gifts of leadership they will bring to the School community over the year ahead, and we know that they will “leave behind something upon which others may build”, just as Mother Gonzaga Barry did herself.
