Congratulations Mia Sutherland (Year 9) for placing second in the Indonesian Sayembara Lisan (Speaking Competition)
As the new Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese highlighted the importance of the Indonesian-Australian relationship by making his first overseas visit to Indonesia, Loreto Toorak Year 9 Bahasa Indonesia students were busy enhancing their language skills for the Sayembara Lisan (Speaking Competition).
The state-wide speaking competition is one of the most anticipated events for students of Bahasa Indonesia to show their ability and compete with other students. All Loreto Toorak Year 9 Indonesian students participated in the competition, of which two students were selected as finalists: Jane Gunawan and Mia Sutherland. Though Jane was unable to compete due to music commitments, Mia went on to compete against students from schools around the state. Although a little nervous, Mia drew on her wonderful work ethic and readiness to take on a challenge to prepare for the final. She practiced during recess and lunchtime with her Indonesian teacher Ibu Crowe (Louise Crowe). It was also wonderful to see the support and encouragement of her fellow Year 9 Indonesian students.
We are all delighted with Mia’s fantastic achievement of second place in the state in the Year 9 Continuers category. She received her certificate at the Awards Night held on Friday 12 August. Mia was grateful for the opportunity to be exposed further to Indonesian culture, as the evening featured delicious Indonesian food and traditional Indonesian dance.

We congratulate Mia and the rest of the Year 9 Indonesian class!
