Molly Cummings - Class Of 1935
Loreto Toorak Alumna, Molly Cummings (1935), has been featured in The 100 Project, which celebrates the lives and stories of Australia's 100-year-olds.
Born on 16 April 1918, Molly grew up in the small town of Warracknabeal, where, at the time, people predominately got around by horse and buggy. Most Australians did not even have phones in their homes; to make a phone call, a person would need to travel to the local Post Office.
Molly joined Loreto Toorak in Year 3 in 1926 and left in 1935. When she was of age she joined the Air Force during World War II, excitedly believing she would be flying planes and fighting for peace. She was rather disappointed to learn her job entailed making phone calls to recruit others to join the war efforts.
Having lived through The Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, technological advancements, women’s rights movements, to changes in sexuality, Molly lived one incredible life. She continued to hope for a bright future, and believed passionately that, despite the atrocities she witnessed, humanity would learn from the past and improve in times ahead.
Sadly, Molly passed away just short of her 102nd birthday.
